At first glance each line appear to be moving in sync with the line opposite itself. When the boxes are toggled on, it appears as though the lines all moving in unison in a circular motion. The boxes change our perception of what is happening despite the lines still moving in the same pattern. We fill in the gaps as though all the lines were connected despite their ends being obscured, and having seen the lines without the boxes there.
