For this illusion, it appears as though the rotating blue square in the middle is growing and shrinking. As the yellow squares move out you can see that the blue square in the middle is of a constant size. The closer the yellow squares come in, the more quickly the blue square appears to change size. Because we cannot see the whole square, our brains fill in what it thinks is happening, causing it to look like the square is changing in size.
