Skiing

It's sort of safe. As long as you don't make a mistake and ski into a crevasse and die.

This is a quote from my buddy, Paul, who is one of my ski partners in crime. He told me this as we were planning the trip pictured at right. Yep, that's me telemark skiing in the powder in the Vail, Colorado, backcountry. We stayed at the Fowler-Hilliard Hut, one of the 10th Mountain Division huts, which I highly recommend if you're looking for some adventure. If you look really hard, you might see the hut (rebuilt in 2009) we stayed at in this picture. It was a tad bit stormy that day. I've done similar skiing near Telluride, Colorado, staying at the more rustic (you can ask me what was rustic about it) Ridgway Hut in the San Juan Hut System.

If you don't want to hike all the way up, you can go heli skiing. I've done that at Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.

Here's a of me skiing at Kirkwood, California, in January of 2002 (© Jim Teresco; used by permission). The conditions weren't very good, but it beats work!

Ski hard, ski fast, and get a lot of air.
-- Paul

Wait, wait! I know this band. I know this band. I know this band...
-- Michael K. in the first aid station at Jackson Hole, suffering from a concussion after a spectacular fall and trying to figure out the music that was playing

I would rather have seen the sport of skiing die than have snowboarding be developed.
-- a disgruntled Paul

Let's go! Last run! LAST RUN!!
-- Michael K. at 3:59 PM, everywhere

I was thermally disregulated.
-- Dean after a tough day at Breckenridge, CO

You weren't supposed to jump OVER the tree!
-- Paul to me, after I jumped over a tree at Whistler, Canada

We're taking your ticket and we don't want to see you here ever again.
-- Ski Patrol to Paul at Gore Mt. in NY, after Paul led newbie skier James down a closed trail

Somebody's going to... WHAM! ...ski into that sign!
-- Paul as someone skied into the caution sign in the middle of the trail we were on at Steamboat, CO

It's black. How bad could it be?
-- Jim at Copper Mountain, CO

Michael, geh nicht zu schnell! (Michael, don't go too fast!)
-- My mother, just before I broke my leg at Schwarzsee, Switzerland, in 1967

If it's not blue, it's not ice.
-- Brian Maynard, a Cannon Mountain local

In the end you will be judged
not by your wealth, your knowledge,
or your contribution to mankind,
but by how hard you skied.

(We could be wrong about this, but ski hard anyway, just to be safe)
