COURSE OVERVIEW

The idea of the thinking machine has fascinated our culture ever since the first computers were conceptualized. The independent machine, capable of its own reasoning and extending itself beyond the limits of its programming, has dominated decades of Science Fiction, embodying both our worst fears and our greatest hopes for the future of the machine.

In this course, we will explore the reality behind the fascination. We begin with understanding the basic concepts and practices underlying the field of Artificial Intelligence, including:

• searching solution spaces
• propositional and first-order logic
• game theory

We will then delve into how these practices are applied in various different upper-level pursuits in the field, including:

• expert systems
• machine learning

The required course textbook is ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: STRUCTURES AND STRATEGIES FOR COMPLEX PROBLEM SOLVING, by George F. Luger, Fifth Edition.
