What Is Rugby?

Rugby is a fast-paced and physically demanding team sport that originated in England in the early 19th century. It is played with an oval-shaped ball and involves two teams, each aiming to score more points than the other by carrying, passing, or kicking the ball into the opposing team’s goal area, called the "try zone." Rugby is known for its physical nature, with strong tackles and scrums (where players pack closely together to contest the ball). Players need both endurance and strength, as the game demands constant running, tackling, and strategic ball handling. Rugby is popular globally, especially in countries like New Zealand, England, South Africa, Australia, and France. The Rugby World Cup is one of the biggest sporting events worldwide. The most popular version of the game 15s is comprised of 15 players, 8 forwards and 7 backs.

My Connection with the Sport.

I personally started playing rugby when I got to college. Prior to I played football recreationally and I thought I'd enjoy getting into another contact sport. Over the summer one of the members of Wheaton Men's Rugby had messaged me asking me if I'd be interested, but what really got my attention was when some members of the team spotted me out during my orientation. In a crowd of hundreds of first-years wearing the same shirts, they spotted me. Maybe rugby was what I was looking for. I showed up at practice, found a love for the game and am still playing in my Junior Year. I most often play #3 which is a Tight-Head Prop in the Forwards Pack. On my left in the front row are the other Loose-Head Prop and the Hooker. The main role of the props is to support the hooker, as well as the rest of the team, in scrums, lineouts, and plays.
