Pole vaulting is a jumping event in track and field where athletes use a pole to clear different heights. At each height, they get three attempts to clear the bar without knocking it over. If they clear it, they progress to the next height. If they fail all three attempts, they are finished competing.
My connection with pole vaulting is that I compete in it for the Wheaton Track and Field Team. I got into it when some people I rock climb with told me about it. This made me give it a try, and I loved it. Ever since then, I have competed in pole vaulting and continued training for it.
| Equipment | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Pole | Helps the athlete go over the bar. |
| Crossbar | The bar the athlete attempts to clear. |
| Landing Mat | Provides a padded landing area. |
You can get involved with pole vaulting by joining a local pole vault club. Some schools and clubs host pole vaulting clinics where beginners can learn about the sport from experienced coaches.
