Writing as a Hobby

Writing novels is a lot of work, and there are many different genres to choose from, including: fantasy, sci/fi, historical fiction, thrillers, mystery, and many others. A novel is typically has around 70,000-100,000 words or more.

Though I tend to favor long-form fiction, I also enjoy writing poetry. Poetry follows many rules as well, but it is often shorter and typically.

My Connection to Writing

I've been writing since I was very young. It's one of my first and longest-lasting hobbies. I enjoy creating characters that have a compelling story arc, and exploring how they interact with the world and characters around them.

Writing has been with me through the worst times in my life. Whenever I had a bad day, I could always rely on my characters as a way to cheer myself up. I started writing poetry as a way to explore those feelings in a way that felt geniune, and kept writing long-form fiction as a way to explore someplace different.

There really is no correct way to start writing, but there are classes at Wheaton College, and clubs too! Rushlight takes all sorts of creative media, including short stories, poems, and art, both 2D and 3D.

The only materials you need to start writing are a notebook and a pen, or a laptop if that's easier.

Brainstorm with a friend if you start feeling stuck!
