What is Fieldhockey?

Fieldhockey is a fast-paced, team sport typically played on grass or artifical turf. Teams consist of 11 players including a goalkeeper. Players use the flat side of the stick to control the ball, pass to teammates, and attempt to score. The ball is not allowed to touch anyone's shoes or hands - only contact with the stick. Shots on goal are only valid if they are made from within the circle - a painted semi-circle around the net. The game has four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes. If the four quarters result in a tie, teams may decide to go to sudden death or reduced players.

My Connection to the Sport

I started playing field hockey at 12 when my mom signed me up for a local club. I attended night clinics and eventually played through middle school and part of high school. In the summers, I went to a field hockey camp run by my club, where we were divided into age groups and practiced various drills and activities. Being part of a team, both in club and high school, played a huge role in my upbringing. The team dynamic, both on and off the field, fueled my love for the sport. My high school team was especially impressive, regularly reigning as Cape and Islands league champions and advancing to state finals which always made the game much more rewarding.
