What is Makeup?
To some, makeup is an oppressive product forced on specific genders to uphold patriarchal rhetoric. To others, it is an unnecessary task, barely even seen as a hobby, just a waste of money. And to the general public, it is just that gunk you put on your face to "appear nicer." However, to me, makeup is one of my many accessories, one of the many art forms I partake in, and my self-expression.
My Past with Makeup
I was fascinated with makeup and its many genres throughout middle and high school. Like many others, I was drawn to the beauty community of YouTube, which I consider the backbone of internet culture. However, I only started to indulge in my curiosity a few months into the 2020 pandemic. All I had was time and some materials I could steal from my mother. At first, I loosely picked it up every once in a while when I felt motivated. But once Halloween came around and I had to practice my Coraline makeup, there was no going back for me. I played with colors and shading enough for my parents to generously gift me a vanity the following Christmas. Once we were free to wander the streets again, I started to play with eyeliner and draw all kinds of things on my face. I began to lean into darker themes and looks once I developed my style. Even today, I am constantly learning and evolving in makeup.
How to Start!
As annoying as it sounds, the best way to get started is to..start. You may not have all the time granted to you as I did, but cut out some days for yourself to practice in your own home. And start big! The crazier and more expressive, the better to further your skills faster. Don't be afraid! Just try! And borrow makeup from family members if you want to wait to spend money on any. Another piece of advice is to learn your eye shape, face shape, and undertone so you know how to do looks that complement you.
How to Learn More
There are many great YouTube videos online. Follow tutorials with people who look very similar to you. You can learn a lot from various people and subcultures! Stay curious and learn as much as possible.
