Birds at 11 Seminary Way Here is a list of the birds that we have observed at our new home on 11 Seminary Way. We have heard some others, for example the "Hoot Owl", but it can't make the list until we see it! |

| Red-winged Blackbird | ![]() |
This is one of Papa's favorite birds. They are a joy to watch, typically around wetlands, e.g., near the outlet of Pease Pond. They cry, "oooo-lin". We always thought they were calling my Jr. High math teacher Roland Roux ("Olin Ou"). Mr. Roux was my first math teacher to introduce variables, you know, x = x + 1. And we cried, "Hey, you can't use letters in math!" It turns out, you can't do math without 'em. |
| Bluejay | ![]() |
My Dad taught me that the Bluejay cries "theif, theif"!! They can be a deer hunter's friend when they make a fuss as a deer comes by ... and they can be the bird feeder bully. |
| Canada Goose | ![]() |
The Canada Goose is better when flying in a "V" at about 150 feet than when seen on the ground. If you are around them on the ground, too late! Check your shoes! |
| Red Cardinal | ![]() |
The Cardinal is a joy in the evening. Just after sunset each night they call to each other, "TWEET, TWeet, Tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet." |
| Black-capped Chickadee | ![]() |
Can anyone from Maine not love the Chickadee? |
| American Crow | ![]() |
In a second life, Papa wants to be a crow. From early days at Pease Pond, he has been practicing his calls. "Caaaw, cawww, cuch, cuch." Translation: "Oh, a wise guy, yuk, yuk." |
| Mourning Dove | ![]() |
Dave likes the call of the Mourning Dove. "Woo- woooo", sort of like a loon, just a little softer. |
| Common Grackle | ![]() |
|
| Red-tailed Hawk | ![]() |
We love the Hawk, even if the local crows do not. He hovers around the back yard, scouting for the chickmonk who isn't paying attention. On a bright sunny day, we can see his red tail features clearly. |
| Ruby-throated Hummingbird | Hummer! Grammie's feeder at Pease Pond convinced us that we needed our own feeder. It took a week or so, but soon they were frequenting for drinks and aerodynamic battles. | |
| "Slate-colored" (Northern) Junco | ![]() |
Commonly referred to as the "snow bird", the Junco's sure enough showed up after a snow to feed on our seed on the ground. |
| Killdeer | ||
| Golden-crowned Kinglet | ![]() |
The Kinglet is a very small but very beautiful bird. The truth is that they are hard to find and see. Our only siting is the one that unfortunately hit the window pane and broke his neck. We marveled at his wonderous colors on his head. |
| Nuthatch | ![]() |
The Nuthatch is just fun to watch traveling around and around the tree trunks upside down. I wonder how they'd do it in Australia? |
| Baltimore Oriole | ![]() |
A most beautiful song. Papa enjoys seeing the Oriole since we did not see them growing up in Maine. |
| American Robin | ![]() |
Our Robin's are the keepers of the spring and the constant singers through the woods. Rarely a time goes by when you can not hear them chatting with each other. |
| Titmouse | ![]() |
Next to the Chickadee, this is perhaps the cutiest little bird there is. Some say the Nuthatch is a Chickadee playing Robin Hood. |
| Red-bellied Woodpecker | ![]() |
Jonnie loves the Woodpecker. He likes watching him poking holes in the trees looking for his next snack. |
